Concentration camp sex stories
The first inmates were largely German – political dissidents who were anti-fascist Social Democrats or Communists.
But later Jehovah’s Witnesses, Jews and Gypsies along with Poles, Ukrainians, and large numbers of Russians were swept into the camp.
Others were the cruellest overseers and guards or SS staff who had been trained at Ravensbruck before “graduating” and moving to other camps.
Many received the death sentence and were executed.
Brutal beatings and whippings were common along with solitary confinement in the camp’s feared punishment “bunker”.
The victories were mostly small and personal, the holding of history or language classes, theatre and music groups, drawing or sharing recipes. However, there was no escaping the everyday atrocities at Ravensbruck.
When the few survivors who had not died gave evidence at the war trials, the disability and deformities were apparent.
Simons recalls some of the evidence.“I remember one doctor who was involved in the killing of prisoners,” she says.“He explained why he did it, saying that otherwise he would have been sent to the front."He was saying he would rather kill other people in the camps than go to the war.“This was a doctor who was meant to be helping humanity and here he was killing people.”Armed resistance was impossible at Ravensbruck but the women did find ways to fight back.
From there she became a friend to the stars throughout the Swinging Sixties and then the Seventies.
She was on first-name terms with The Beatles thanks to her good relationship with the Fab Four’s manager Brian Epstein.
